Taxes will still go up—it would have required a 4 cent cut to stay even with last year—due to a rise in assessments. However, City Manager Selena Cuffee-Glenn's original budget proposal called for cutting the real estate tax rate by 2 cents and putting the other two cents into a reserve to fund transportation projects. Council members rejected that idea, saying it wasn't the right time. The extra 1 cent per $100 of assessed value—worth about $850,000—will go toward funding a school employee retirement plan. |
