| Attention HRBT and MMBT commuters: $2. Each way. Wed, 28 May 2008 16:19:57 -0500 "Republican legislators pressed Virginia's transportation secretary Wednesday on why Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's transportation funding proposal does not include more use of public-private partnerships," the Associated Press reports. The Republicans, who wrote last year's transportation package that included additional and higher taxes in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, seem to be rallying around Del. Phil Hamilton's push to basically privatize the bridge-tunnels and let contractors put tolls on the crossings to raise money. The number that keeps coming up is $2 each way. | The Atlantic on Webb: The right man for the job? Wed, 28 May 2008 15:16:57 -0500 The Atlantic.com started an interesting discussion last Friday with its story about why Barack Obama should choose Sen. Jim Webb as his running mate (should he win the Democratic nomination). The writer, Reihan Salam, talked about Webb's success with the GI bill legislation, his time as Navy secretary under Ronald Reagan, his ability -- given his military background -- to question John McCain without having his patriotism challenged. The comments, which are well worth a read, don't really question Webb's ability -- they focus more on his electability. They mention the "Why Women Can't Fight" article Webb wrote that became an issue during his contest to unseat George Allen. They don't mention (at least they didn't when I read them) Webb's little gun imbroglio --... |

When does forever not mean forever? Take the case of an 1832 Bedford County property deed, as interpreted by County Attorney Carl Boggess. Ruby Dooley, a resident agitated over a current plan for part of the county-owned property on Falling Creek Road, snagged the attention of Boggess and the board of supervisors earlier this month when she presented the nearly 2-century-old deed.
