Obama Coming to Virginia Tue, 03 Jun 2008 16:32:23 -0500 Sen. Barack Obama plans to campaign across Virginia Thursday as he attempts to wrap up the Democratic presidential nomination. The Obama campaign annnounced plans to hold a mid-day rally in Bristol, followed by an evening rally in Prince William County. Both events are open to the public. The twin appearances underscore the importance Virginia may hold in the fall presidential race. Long assumed to be a solid Republican state, Virginia has become more competitive politically in recent federal elections. The Obama campaign has touted Virginia as a potential battleground in November against Republican Sen. John McCain. Obama could declare victory in his nomination battle against Sen. Hillary Clinton as early as Tuesday night, following today's primaries in Montana and South Dakota.
Barack Obama continues to signal Virginia in play... Tue, 03 Jun 2008 16:26:38 -0500 It's the rallying cry for Democrats in Virginia every for years, that finally a Presidential candidate in going to put the state in play for the first time since Lyndon Baines Johnson won it in 1964. Well it apears that Barack Obama's strong relationship with Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and the high turnout numbers from the Virginia primary could make the state an important battleground this fall. Now clearly, John McCain's military bona fides are going to give him a leg up in the state, especially in Hampton Roads. But if you were at Obama's rally in Virginia Beach earlier this spring - 17,000 strong - then you know he can turn them out. On Thursday, Obama is coming back to Virginia for a rally...
Democratic Superdelegates Closing Ranks Tue, 03 Jun 2008 16:16:09 -0500 Some of the roughly 200 uncommitted Democratic party superdelegates are expected to make presidential endorsements within hours of the polls closing Tuesday in Montana and South Dakota. That includes at least one Virginia superdelegate: Jim Leaman, president of the Virginia AFL-CIO. ``I'll be coming out after the polls close tonight," said Leaman, who has remained neutral for months in the nomination battle between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton. He said he made his mind up on an endorsement some time ago, but wanted to wait until tonight so that all voters get a chance to have their say. Of Virginia's 16 superdelegates-- elected officials and senior party activists who get automatic votes at the Democratic National Convention-- five are backing Clinton and seven...
How would Jesus vote? Tue, 03 Jun 2008 10:49:05 -0500 Well, he's against money changers in the temple for sure, right? The National "How would Jesus vote?" tour kicks off in Richmond next weekend - JUne 14. Billed as a "series of public discussion forums to help Christians decide how to vote in the upcoming Presidential elections," the tour is going to make stops in Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles before heading for Washington D.C. It seems like this series could flirt with the barrier between church and state, but as long as the preachers don't come right out and endorse a candidate, they'll probably be able to maintain their tax exempt status. The dialogue is going to be especially interesting in a year where religious leaders have faced such tough scrutiny on the campaign...

Gilmore-Warner Big Issue No. 1: The "$6 billion deficit" Tue, 03 Jun 2008 09:41:12 -0500 The Bristol Herald Courier's editorial board has wasted no time in getting behind Mark Warner in the battle of the former guvs. They didn't use the word "endorsement" in their piece this morning, but they could have. Jim Gilmore, they write, "comes from the no-tax, but still spend, wing of his party." It's a reference, of course, to the First Big Issue of the campaign to succeed retiring Sen. John Warner -- the dispute over the "$6 billion deficit." Warner says he inherited that deficit from Gilmore. Gilmore says that can't be true because Virginia law requires a balanced budget. Who's right? They both are, but on this issue, Warner is righter than Gilmore. Yes, the budget Gilmore left behind was balanced, as required. So...
