| Kaine's a nice guy, but Chelsea was the star of Texas Mon, 09 Jun 2008 15:32:10 -0500 According to one reviewer -- Natasha Chen at Huffington Post -- Gov. Tim Kaine did a decent job filling in for Barack Obama at the Texas Democratic convention over the weekend. Unfortunately for the guv, he had a superstar to contend with: Chelsea Clinton. Here's a link. |

Thelma Drake in the 2nd District. Drake has faced, and defeated, two strong Democratic challengers in her two races for the office -- David Ashe and Phil Kellam. | Join us for live blogging at 2 p.m. Wednesday Mon, 09 Jun 2008 13:29:52 -0500 The special session on transportation is just around the corner, and two key Republicans will join us this week to discuss what's up. Del. Phil Hamilton and Del. Glenn Oder, both Republicans from Newport News, will visit the Shad Plank at 2 p.m. Wednesday to do some live blogging on transportation. Both men have immersed themselves in the issue, especially when it comes to expanding the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. They've requested that VDOT study the feasibility of expanding the HRBT by one tube. Hamilton wants the state to be more aggressive in pursuing tolls and private-sector leases to kick-start projects in Tidewater. Are tolls are a good idea? Would you pay $2 one way to traverse the HRBT? Would a gas tax be better? How... |
| Jim Webb on "The Daily Show" tonight Mon, 09 Jun 2008 13:23:52 -0500 Jim Webb a comedian? Probably not, but he does get to sit down opposite Jon Stewart tonight on The Daily Show on Comedy Central. No doubt the Virginia Democrat will be answering questions about how difficult it is to write books while serving in the Senate. And possibly something about Barack Obama. Stay up late. The show starts at 11. We'll get a link to the video posted as soon as it becomes available. Also on the senator's schedule for the week is the state Democratic convention in Hampton Saturday. |
| Up in the sky! It's a bird! A plane! It's a ... Republican? Mon, 09 Jun 2008 12:25:35 -0500 Former Gov. Jim Gilmore will soar over Virginia on Tuesday to kick-start his U.S. Senate bid. The Republican will hit Richmond, Norfolk and Manassas, and we wouldn't be surprised to hear more talk about reducing gas prices and keeping taxes low. Gilmore sounded those themes when he accepted the nomination at the GOP state convention a little more than week ago. The fly-around will be followed by visits to more than 40 cities and localities in what the campaign is billing as the "Working Families Tour." Among the scheduled stops are Virginia Beach, Roanoke, Bristol, Harrisonburg and Lynchburg. He'll need to stay busy against Democratic former Gov Mark R. Warner, who leads in the polls and in fund-raising. Gilmore also needs to do a fair... |
| Brandon Bell on contributions and conditions Mon, 09 Jun 2008 12:16:18 -0500 Former state Sen. Brandon Bell -- like Marty Williams locally, Bell lost to another Republican in last year's primary -- offers a critique of Walter Curt, possibly the next finance chair of the Republican Party of Virginia, on his blog, Roanoke Red Zone. According to Bell, Curt is wealthy and generous to GOP candidates, but attaches very tight strings to his offers of support. |

| McCain makes a quick fund-raising swing through Virginia Mon, 09 Jun 2008 11:00:21 -0500 John McCain is in Richmond at the moment for a private fund-raiser at the Omni Richmond Hotel. The Associated Press reports that before the fund-raiser, McCain stopped at a coffee shop for a bit of hand-shaking. Accompanying him was Paul Galanti who, like McCain, was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Galanti is one of McCain's Virginia campaign co-chairs. In 2004, Galanti appeared in one of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads that attacked John Kerry for his comments about the war. After the Richmond stop, McCain heads to McLean for a fund-raiser at the Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner. |
| Vince Callahan, former Gilmore ally, endorsing Warner Mon, 09 Jun 2008 09:27:13 -0500 The Washington Post is reporting that Vince Callahan -- the former chairman of the House Appropriation Committee and a one-time Jim Gilmore ally -- is endorsing Mark Warner for U.S. Senate. Here's a link. According to the Post, Callahan says the numbers Gilmore used to push through his no-car-tax plan were "so utterly erroneous and far-fetched that they were mind-boggling." Ouch. Callahan apparently feels double stung because he helped Gilmore get the legislation passed. |

Get ready for laughs and fun in Sandler's 'Zohan' Fri, 6 Jun 2008 00:00:00 -0400 There's a spirit of avant-garde goofiness to the new Adam Sandler movie that sets it apart from his usual sophomoric work. Sprung from the fertile comic imaginations of Robert Smigel ("Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog") and Judd Apatow (the grand vizier of film comedy), it exists in a slap-happy parallel universe. In "You Don't Mess with the Zohan," Israeli commandos dream of styling mousse and blow driers, hummus is a dip served with eyeglasses, and Mariah Carey asks terrorists to explain Bluetooth technology. |

'Europa' is studious film Fri, 6 Jun 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Almost five years ago, as the U.S.-led occupational forces in Iraq watched looters ransack the national museum in Baghdad, the world in turn witnessed an all-too-cyclical tragedy. 'Blueberry Nights' is miles from reality with characters that just disappear Fri, 6 Jun 2008 00:00:00 -0400 The road to romantic recovery is meandering, far-flung and thousands of miles long in "My Blueberry Nights," Wong Kar Wai's first English-language film. Norah Jones, in her bland screen debut, plays a brokenhearted New Yorker named Elizabeth who sets out on a road trip across America after a bad breakup, presumably in search of oblivion or at the very least a change of scenery. But first, she wallows, spending a series of long, woozy nights in an otherwise ever-deserted diner basking in the melancholy sympathy of diner owner and fellow lonely-heart, Jeremy, improbably played by Jude Law. If this is the guy she goes to for a shoulder, you have to wonder who she's pining for. |

Harborfest splashes down in Norfolk Fri, 6 Jun 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Head to the waterfront this weekend for the biggest, coolest southside festival of the summer H arborfest — the grande dame of Hampton Roads outdoor festivals — sails back into downtown Norfolk this weekend. In case you're new to the region, here's a checklist of what to expect: Beer? You betcha, and plenty of it. Concerts? The country, pop and soul will be pumping from moderately hot acts such as Deana Carter, Marc Cohn and The Temptations. Explosions? Oh yeah. Fireworks will sling glowing color across the sky above Town Point Park. But what about boats? Don't sweat it. Harborfest wouldn't be Harborfest without majestic tall ships. This year's flotilla will include what's described as the nation's newest tall ship, the 141-foot Spirit of South Carolina. |
