King finished 14-13 in singles, including a 13-11 record at No. 5 in dual matches. In doubles, he was 10-16, including a 9-13 record at the third spot with Frederic Petrilli of Ecuador. King was the only American in the top six for The Citadel, which finished 15-10, 5-3 in the conference, and gained the sixth seed in the SoCon tournament. He achieved vastly better results than he did as a sophomore, when he was 3-14 in singles, mostly at No. 4, and 4-13 in doubles, primarily at the third spot. King, a 5-foot-11, 185-pounder, helped the Bulldogs pull off a dramatic turnaround from a 2-21, 0-10 season in 2007, when six of their defeats were to teams in the national top 60. As a freshman reserve in 2006, King played five singles matches and won two. He wanted to go to a military school and serve his country, receiving that chance at The Citadel. He's majoring in criminal justice. King graduated from Kecoughtan High after winning the Peninsula District singles tournament on three occasions, going unbeaten against PD opponents in each case. As a sophomore, he guided the Warriors to their first unbeaten PD season since 1973. He was the Peninsula tournament runner-up as a freshman, when he attended Hampton High. In his 12th-grade year, the three-time Daily Press All-Star grabbed a berth in the state Group AAA singles tournament by reaching the Eastern Region championship match. |
