A column by Donald Luzzatto in last Friday's Virginian-Pilot (here's a link) struck a nerve with a couple of bloggers. He started with the Disney-Pixar movie "Wall-E," and suggested that one of the key's to Pixar's success is its collaborative creative process -- something that he also sees in the production of a newspaper, where a front-page package usually requires the combined efforts of reporters, photographers, graphic artists and a couple of layers of editors. I know what he means. But Luzzatto tacked on a paragraph that is likely to haunt him for a long time -- and get him more page views and e-mails than he's ever had before. In four starts for the Pioneer League rookie club of the Chicago White Sox, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander has gone 1-1 with a 3.18 earned-run average. He has struck out 22 and walked just four in 17 innings, giving up 14 hits, including one home run. Headed into Friday's play, the Voyagers (14-9) led the North Division by one game. Hudson was picked in the fifth round, 150th overall, by the White Sox and received a $180,000 signing bonus in June. That made him the 12th ODU player to be drafted in the fifth round or earlier. As a junior in 2008, his final season with ODU, Hudson received second-team all-Colonial Athletic Association honors by going 5-6 with a 4.76 ERA in 92 innings. He led the CAA with 107 strikeouts and held opponents to a .249 batting average. In three seasons and 292 innings, he struck out 295 — the second-most in ODU history and the 10th-most in CAA history. As a junior, he pitched three complete games, including 13 in a game against CAA tournament champion James Madison. As a sophomore, he was a first-team all-CAA pitcher. That season, he was 8-5 with a 3.46 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 106 2/3 innings. In his first year at ODU, he was named a freshman All-American and posted seven wins, including a five-hit shutout at Hofstra. Hudson led Princess Anne to the 2005 state Group AAA crown by going 11-2 with a 1.12 ERA. He was an honor-roll student, Beach District player of the year, first-team all-state pitcher and second-team all-state first baseman for PA. |
