| And the governor is ... where? Sat, 19 Jul 2008 15:10:30 -0500 One of the most awkward moments in the U.S. Senate debate between Democrat Mark R. Warner and Republican Jim Gilmore came at the very beginning. Unbeknownst to audience members, there was a problem with the audio and video feed to the candidates' respective war rooms. Gilmore's people thought their feed was off and Warner's was on, and Gilmore didn't want to proceed until the problem was resolved. So here we are in the grand ballroom at The Homestead as the emcee steps up to the mike and introduces Gilmore. Loud applause. No Gilmore. He wasn't taking the stage until someone fixed the problem. As we understand it, the debate went off without a video or audio feed to either candidate's room, so it was all... |
| The debate is over ... Sat, 19 Jul 2008 12:03:43 -0500 so let the debate begin. Who won? Neither Democrat Mark Warner nor Republican Jim Gilmore committed any major gaffes. The exchanges were pointed, reflecting their distaste for each other. Neither man had any particularly effective one-liners or seemed to have the other guy on the ropes. Was it boring? Well, no. The big policy issue was energy and off-shore drilling. Gilmore accused Warner of flip-flopping on the question of whether to allow drilling. Warner's position: He want to lift the federal moratorium on offshore drilling and let the states decide. Gilmore says that contrasts with Warner's statements from a month ago, when Warner said he favored exploring for oil, but not necessarily developing it, and letting the states decide. Warner accused Gilmore of being a... |

Saunders will be joining us at The Shad Plank at noon Wednesday (July 23) for an hour or so of live-blogging. So come on back and join the conversation. |
| The DP's "Homestead" bureau checking in ... Sat, 19 Jul 2008 09:37:35 -0500 Hey blogosphere: I've landed at the Homestead and figured out the Internet connection. The debate between Republican Jim Gilmore and Democrat Mark R. Warner starts in about 30 minutes. A few observations: The Homestead is really nice, and no, the Daily Press does not have a bureau here. But it should. Note to boss: Adding my photo to the previous post, um, was that really necessary? Warner has won the sign wars in and around Bath County, for whatever value that is. Considering he has $5.1 million in the bank to Gilmore's $117,000, Warner should be out front, yes? We noticed a few signs supporting Republican John McCain for president and Warner for U.S. Senate. Disaffected Republicans? I haven't seen Warner yet, but bumped into... |

| Rove appears amid protesters, accusations and counter-accusations Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:32:28 -0500 Protesters crashed a sold-out fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake featuring Karl Rove on Friday, calling for the arrest of the lightning rod Republican guru. Democrats had been calling for Drake’s re-election campaign to cancel the luncheon at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in the Virginia Beach Town Center. Rove arrived early Friday afternoon and about 40 protesters spent more than three hours picketing, even staging a mock trail complete with robes and wigs. “It’s a shame that Thelma Drake decided it was OK to spend time with Karl Rove when she may very well be voting on him for contempt of Congress in a couple of weeks,” said Jared Leopold, a spokesman for the state Democratic Party. “I guess we know where her vote will lie.”... |
| 40 protesters picket Rove appearance at Drake fund-raiser Fri, 18 Jul 2008 14:19:31 -0500 The Pilot reports that about 40 protesters gathered at the Virginia Beach Town Center to picket former White House adviser Karl Rove's appearance at a fund-raiser for U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake. Two Virginia Beach Democratic state delegates, Bobby Mathieson and Joe Bouchard, had called on Drake to cancel the fund-raiser after Rove decided to ignore a subpoena from the House Judiciary Committee. Rove, citing executive privilege, said he was immune to the subpoena. Drake declined to cancel the fund-raiser, which was held at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. Click here to read the story. |
| Republican National Committee sets up shop in Hampton Roads... Fri, 18 Jul 2008 13:27:17 -0500 The Republican National Committee is setting up its regional headquarters in Virginia Beach on Saturday at 10 a.m. U.S. Rep Thelma Drake is going to be the honored guest at the kickoff. Hampton Roads has got to be a key spot on the GOP map these days. Drake is used to tough campaign challenges, but she's dealing with a different climate this year. It remains to be seen how well Democrat Glenn Nye will do in his first campaign as summer turns to fall, but he's definitely been pounding the pavement and getting some good donations. On the national scene, Hampton Roads is probably strange territory because of it's large urban and African-American populations. Republican John McCain has strong military links here that are likely... |

| Obama's relief plan Fri, 18 Jul 2008 12:36:30 -0500 With unemployment on the rise, Barack Obama's presidential campaign touted the Democrat's economic stimulus plan for Virginia. The state's unemployment rate was 4 percent in June, up from 3 percent a year earlier, according to a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a conference call with Virginia reporters, Obama's economic advisor, Jason Furman, said Obama's $50 billion national stimulus plan would mean $1.28 billion in relief for Virginia. That money would be used to give rebate checks to families, provide aid to the cash-strapped state government, and create a relief fund to help homeowners at risk of foreclosure, Furman said. The campaign also touted Obama's tax cut for working families, which would offer up to $500 per worker, or $1,000 per family.... |

If the center of circulation stays over water, this could develop into a tropical system. If it stays inland it will likely just be a rain maker. Either way, we expect the storm to impact us with at least some rain this weekend and early next week. |
