Star Track: Dexter Carter Thu, 31 Jul 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Dexter Carter , 21, of the Great Falls Voyagers, a former pitcher for Old Dominion and the Peninsula Pilots, was named the Player of the Week in the Pioneer League for pro-baseball rookies. He won two starts, beating the Dodgers-affiliated Ogden Raptors on July 21 and Reds-affiliated Billings Mustangs on Sunday. In that span, he yielded just one earned run in 10 innings. He struck out seven and gave up seven hits and three walks. The 6-foot-6, 195-pounder grew up in Murfreesboro, N.C., and went to Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, where his coach was former major-league pitcher Gary Lavelle. Carter was a first-team all-state independent pitcher. In 2005, the Texas Rangers chose him in the 12th round, but he didn't head to the pros. He went to Louisburg (N.C.) Community College instead, going 4-0 with a 2.25 earned-run average. This year, the Chicago White Sox chose him in the 13th round, and he headed northwest to Montana. He began his time with Great Falls by going 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA in eight games, in which he has pitched 30 2/3 innings. He has struck out 38. As a Pilot, he played in 2006 and '07, pitching 96 innings and going 5-5 with a 3.28 ERA in the Coastal Plain League. He started 18 games and entered two in relief, striking out 109 batters and giving up 72 hits. With ODU in 2007, Carter was 2-5 with a 4.50 earned-run average in 14 games, including a shutout of Norfolk State, 11 starts and 70 innings. He gave up 74 hits, walked 28 and struck out 65. This year with the Monarchs, he was 3-4 with an 8.76 ERA in 12 contests, seven of which he started. He worked 37 innings, yielded 36 hits and 33 walks but he struck out 35. He won his last two games, beating Radford and Richmond, to gain momentum he has continued with as a pro. |

PULASKI -- Kris Sanchez had to have a little of what they call around here "the big head" after his senior season of high school baseball. A little arrogance was understandable. Sanchez was on his way to the University of Arizona fresh off two state championships at Tucson's Canyon Del Oro High. He had been chosen All State in the classification that includes the state's largest high schools. His own school had something like 3,000 students and sent five guys on to current spots on major league rosters. |
