Wittman calls for a special session on energy in August. Really Fri, 01 Aug 2008 13:50:25 -0500 Update: Turns out Rob Wittman was not playing the Lone Ranger on energy. A short while ago, a press release arrived from Rep. Thelma Drake of Norfolk, also calling for a special session on energy, as did one from House Republican Leader John Boehner, which carried the headline: "Boehner, GOP Leaders Demand Pelosi Call Emergency House Session to Vote on Lower Gasoline Prices." Boehner's office also contacted me individually, accusing me of taking a "cheap shot" at Rep. Wittman. So for the record, here at Shad Plank, we try to take the Will Rogers approach -- we'll needle anyone. And we've never met a man (or woman) we didn't like. ''' U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman shot out a press release a few minutes ago calling...
Jody Wagner clears the way for a statewide race... Fri, 01 Aug 2008 13:34:57 -0500 Gov. Timothy M. Kaine accepted the resignation of Secretary of Finance Jody Wagner today, and announced that she'll serve until Aug.8 - or the end of next week. This clears the way for Wagner to finally jump into another campaign, most likely the 2009 race for Lt. Governor. Wagner, who lives in Virginia Beach, has been linked to numerous campaigns over the years - basically whenever state Democrats needed a statewide candidate. Wagner lost a bid for Congress in 2000, and since then has served as the head of the state's Finance Department. Currently, Jon Bowerbank - a southwestern Virginia businessman - is the only other Democrat in the running for the spot, and either Democrat for have to try to take the seat from...
Veepometer: Oh-oh, there's a Lieberman factor Fri, 01 Aug 2008 13:09:28 -0500 ABC News is reminding people of a 2004 story that appeared in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, in which Gov. Tim Kaine endorsed Joe Lieberman for president over John Edwards and John Kerry. (Here's a link.) "Joe is the right person to revive the Harry Truman wing of the Democratic Party," Kaine is quoted as saying. And he continues: Lieberman "clearly personifie(s) the party's commitment to faith, family and a values-based approach to public life." Lieberman's commitment to the party has, of course, been called into question since, seeing as how he is now being talked about as a possible veep candidate for John McCain. Kaine could latch onto a predictable defense: But everybody thought Joe was a Democrat back then! How was I to know? He...
Gilmore says he'll meet with OLF opponents next week Fri, 01 Aug 2008 12:40:26 -0500 Former Gov. and current GOP Senate candidate Jim Gilmore plans to meet next week with members of the ad hoc group formed to oppose the Navy's proposed "outlying landing field," the Tidewater News in Franklin reports. (Here's a link.) Former Gov. and current Democratic Senate candidate Mark Warner hasn't responded to requests for a meeting, the paper says. The outlying landing field, or OLF in milspeak, would in essence be a 2,000-acre training runway with a 30,000-acre buffer zone. The Navy says it needs an OLF to take pressure off of Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, where pilots practicing touch-and-goes routinely rattle walls and drown out conversations. The Navy has identified a handful of potential sites in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina....
When was the last time you heard Haliburton mentioned in a rap? Fri, 01 Aug 2008 11:55:28 -0500 Iconic rapper Nas has recently released a new album, and the big time East Coast star is stirring it up with Fox News. The feud between Nas and Fox News started in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shooting when Fox personality Bill O'Reilly made a stink about Nas performing at a benefit concert because of the lyrics in his songs. O'Reilly labeled Nas a "gansta rapper" because of his use of violent images and words like "kill" and "murder" in his rhymes. Now Nas has taken aim at Fox in a new song on his new album called "Sly Fox." The song includes some explicit lyrics - obviously - but it is fascinating to see a rapper making a political statement instead of telling...
NOW - (Holton + Wagner) = a Kaine tick on the Veepometer Fri, 01 Aug 2008 10:04:23 -0500 Two gender-related ticks on the Tim Kaine Veepometer. 1. NOW, the National Organization for Women, says it doesn't like the guv because of his "faith-based opposition to abortion." (Kaine's a proud Catholic.) Eileen at VB Dems takes issue with NOW and urges them to accept the fact that Hillary Clinton is not the Democratic nominee, which we're guessing will be a fairly widespread response. Together, that adds up to one point in Kaine's favor. Running Veepometer total: +7 2. In Richmond tomorrow, Virginia First Lady Anne Holton headlines what the Obama campaign calls "the Virginia Women for Obama, Families for Change statewide kickoff." State Finance Secretary Jody Wagner leads the local version, at 2 p.m. at the Hampton campaign office (1040-D Settlers Landing Road). And...

August 01: Feedback from newspaper readers Fri, 1 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Tuesday you had an article in the Business section, "Creating bonds a photo at a time," and I'm staring at a pregnant woman's belly. I thought the article belonged in the Life section rather than the Business section. I didn't think it was an article about business. Also in Business, I miss "story stocks," where you would profile four different companies with charts and information about what's going on with them. I've seen some papers run up to six company's information. It was very informative if you own stocks. Maybe you can stick that in the paper somewhere, maybe on Sunday. But the "story stocks" was very well done. |
