Star Track: Megan Moulton-Levy Mon, 4 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Megan Moulton-Levy , the most accomplished women's tennis player in William and Mary history, recently earned her first professional title in the minor leagues. She defeated Great Britain's Emily Webley-Smith 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Fifth Third Classic in Evansville, Ind., part of the U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit. This 10th annual event gives players the chance to improve their WTA Tour rankings and qualify for tournaments with bigger purses. Moulton-Levy, a 5-foot, muscle-bound ball of energy, gained the $1,568 first-place prize by winning the last three games against Webley-Smith, a former top-250 WTA player who entered the match ranked 792nd. The finalists then shared a rental car to St. Joseph, Mo., for the next tournament. In an Evansville semifinal, Moulton-Levy beat 712th-ranked Nicole Gibbs in three sets. The former Tribe star won in straight sets over 817th-ranked Tori Kinard in the second round. Those victories helped elevate Moulton-Levy to No. 766 on the WTA computer. Earlier this summer, she reached the semifinals of a $10,000 challenger in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and the quarterfinals of the $25,000 Waterloo Open, an International Tennis Federation tournament in Canada. Moulton-Levy's college accomplishments are so vast that it's impossible to chronicle all of them, but she won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association indoor doubles championship with Katarina Zoricic and was the 2007 NCAA doubles runner-up with her. She is W&M's all-time leader in doubles victories (125) and combined singles and doubles triumphs (249). She was a four-time Player of the Year in the Colonial Athletic Association and received three such honors in the state, as well as a six-time All-American. She also was the first two-time winner of the Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. She graduated from W&M with a degree in sociology and played the 2008 season as a graduate student, sparking the Tribe to No. 1 in the East Region and No. 21 in the nation, before turning pro. |
