| Jim Gilmore cancels local golf outing... Wed, 06 Aug 2008 15:34:51 -0500 No real official word on exactly what went down with a Jim Gilmore golf outing this week at Kiln Creek Golf Club and Resort, but the Thursday event has been ditched. The folks in the pro-shop said that they weren't sure what the reason was, but it appears that this might be another case of the Republican struggling to fill up his campaign coffers. Gilmore is hoping to fill the seat being left behind by retiring Republican U.S, Sen. John Warner, but so far the former governor is having some trouble funding the race. It doesn't help that he's facing that other, unrelated Warner - fellow former Gov. Mark R. - who is a bit of a fundraising beast. According to the flier for the... |
| Touching introduction from Beth Robinson... Wed, 06 Aug 2008 12:34:22 -0500 The event just kicked off with an introduction from Beth Robinson, with her Marine husband and 18-month old daughter in the audience. Robinson's husband Matt has been in the Marine Corps for more than 13 years and he deployed to Iraq in 2001, 2003, twice more since 2006, and once to Afghanistan. They expect him to be deployed again within the next year. Beth and Matt have been married for 12 years, and she suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. The 33-year-old mother was cheered on by a sympathetic crowd that frequently yelped out encouragement and even on moment where her toddler made a bit of a cry for "Mama." Robinson lamented the state of the country's health care system - specifically the treatment for military men... |
| The unbelievable Andy Fox... Wed, 06 Aug 2008 11:45:53 -0500 I guess he was desperate to get on the noon broadcast - but that was a pretty absurd show put on by Wavy TV 10's Andy Fox just now. As the entire audience respectfully listened to Glenn Nye's speech about Barack Obama and the future of local Democratic politics, Fox opted to talk right on through to his camera. Wow, touch of class. |
| Coming to you live from ODU with Michelle Obama... Wed, 06 Aug 2008 11:45:14 -0500 The crowds are starting to pile in at the Batten Arts and Letters Building at Old Dominion University to see Michelle Obama talk with military families. We're supposed to kick off in a bit but apparently the wife of the presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama is reading with kids at nearby elementary school. Michelle Obama read with the kids and then played a game where the kids competed to spell the word "helpful." Following on with the release this morning of a string of local active duty and retired military members serving as an advisory panel for Obama's campaign - it's becoming clear that Republican John McCain is going to have to invest time and money in Hampton Roads. McCain has local clout because of... |
| Paris Hilton weighs in. Wed, 06 Aug 2008 13:13:52 -0500 America's energy problem is best solved via a limited plan for offshore oil drilling -- with strict environmental oversight -- coupled with tax incentives for more fuel-efficient vehicles. The former could solve the short-term concerns of high gas prices while the latter is a more long-term path to energy independence. I know what you're thinking: Those idiots at the DP screwed up the headline on this post. Nope. That's what Paris Hilton thinks. The celebrity-turned-wonk has coined her own TV ad that refers to Republican presidential candidate John McCain as "that wrinkly, white-haired guy." And which refers to herself as "hot." Hoo boy. McCain started this. He took aim at Democrat Barack Obama with an ad that mocked Obama's celebrity status, and he used Hilton's... |

August 07: Feedback from newspaper readers Thu, 7 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Editor's note: I know some of you will question the placement of the Michelle Obama story without an equal story from the McCain campaign. Fair campaign coverage won't always mean that every day each candidate gets equal treatment; it means fairness over the course of the campaign. Some events, some speeches, some revelations will be more newsworthy than others. Obama was in Hampton Roads on Wednesday, talking to local people. That catapults that coverage to our front page. I expect that when/if John or Cindy McCain visits Hampton Roads, they'll get the same coverage. |
|
August 06: Feedback from newspaper readers Wed, 6 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Nancy, Hampton: I just want you to know that many of us readers are noticing that you are giving much more expansive coverage to the Obama campaign than to the McCain campaign. For example in Monday's "Race for the White House" you have a headline with Obama and nothing for McCain. You have something "red states turning blue," is it I suppose an opposite? And often times, I've noticed that when you do put articles of Obama and McCain side by side, the Obama articles have more column inches and the McCain have frequent references to Obama whose name has appeared in some cases more times than McCain's own name in the article that is supposed to be about him. This is such a blatant bias on the part of the Daily Press. I am sure you are going to deny it, but I want you to know that it doesn't go unnoticed. |

Rough spots Thu, 7 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Warwick is a mess, but temporary paving is a waste If you want to start a business with a built-in clientele, you might think about an auto repair shop, specializing in suspension and alignment work, on Warwick Boulevard. The perfect spot: somewhere between J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Nettles Drive. The bone-jarring, teeth-rattling, suspension-springing trip up and down that road is taking a toll on travelers and, sometimes, their cars, thanks to work under way to widen this section of Warwick. |
